Louis Gilbert's Story

Life Hello My Friends, It is amazing that five years have passed since last this was edited, so an update is well past due. I am hopeful life has been kind and generous to you with much love and humor, and that the unpleasant surprises and challenges have been minimal. I find myself approaching 58, I retired five years ago after 28 years with Riverside County in federal Employment and Training Programs, where I served as the Equal Opportunity Officer, assuring appropriate process and access to the various programs. Still, I have retired because I can, and to pursue other projects as a Disability Rights Consultant, with Social Justice and Equity Advocacy Associates. I hold degrees in law and sociology, and do extensive volunteer work with charities and civic groups. There is a daughter by a prior marriage, and have been married for the past eighteen years with Melissa, whom you may visit in the photo section. Two additional step-children were acquisitions from that merger. Melissa has interests in citrus, and a number of activities and charities. My daughter Marika received a degree in fashion design, and after some work in the rag business now finds herself working in the Public Defender's Office, and is working on another degree in Psychology from the University of La Verne. Max has graduated from U.C Riverside and Miles is working with a pizza parlor, and both can attempt to elude apprehension by law enforcement agencies. Max starts a new job tomorrow at Collette Elementary School translating English to Spanish for children. Were it not for his understanding of computer imagery, the above photos would probably still not have been loaded. One area that has been fun is my participation with the Riverside Concert Band after a hiatus of some decades. French Besson makes a fantastic trumpet, and it is just too much fun to take part in local concerts. There are other musical groups, such as the Tuxedo Cats Jass Ensemble, which will perform in three weeks in downtown Riverside, and you are also welcome to attend Handel's Messiah, which is scheduled for 15 December this year at the Mormon Temple on Jackson Street. There has also been extensive work with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, which has also led to consulting with pharmaceutical companies and various advocacy groups. We live in Riverside, but also make it a point to get around to other areas. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to get together, especially to drink your lunch! School Thinking of high school is a chilling experience. The young ladies I admired often did not reciprocate the feeling, and vice versa. As to teachers, I met some truly wonderful people who did things that sent me in directions I am still experiencing. Esther Gobrecht helped me become a much better writer, and I think of her often. Jim Helder encouraged my musical and artistic abilities, and provided jazz guidance. I hope he is well. Winning the Atlantic Monthly Merit Award for Creative Writing for the 1973 competition set the pace of my life. I continue to write, and so many doors were opened that I did not think would be available. You are welcome to see some of the more recent work at Yahoo Voices, simply l...Expand for more
ook for me as Louis Gilbert Lopez, or another easy way to get onto some of my sites and pages is to google "Gilbert Lopez, Multiple Sclerosis." College My fellow law students will remember the joy of attempting to cram life and work into the time also claimed by studies, studies, and still more studies, and trying to remember the significance of Hawkins v McGee, and the intricacies of International Shoe. After this much time it is still just a painful and abusive blur. Maybe it is better remembered that way. As an undergraduate, my life and lifestyle was quite a bit more fun, but equally challenging in much more memorable and enjoyable ways. Pitzer was enticing, but would turn out to be something that demanded much more than you could have imagined. My roommate at first was a mega-structured pre-med major who taped a schedule of his events to the mirror, and attempted to program each minute of his freshman year. He was sincere. I was sincerely his opposite, and perhaps a newer Latino undergrad version of the Odd Couple may yet appear. This was also my opportunity to indulge myself in quanities of psychoactive fluids, as well as types that amaze me to this day. With great profs and great influences, it was a most memorable time. Workplace I have spent a substantial portion of my professional career with Riverside County's federally funded employment and training programs. They have had various alphabet soup acronyms, but they remain a wonderful vestige of the old New Deal concepts. Therefore, these programs are constantly under attack and subject to funding limitations. My last assignment was to act as the Equal Opportunity Officer to assure inclusion and equity to the public and staff. I also acted as a Legislative Analyst to interpret the law and regulations. Presently I consult on such matters through Social Justice and Equity Advocacy Associates in such areas as EEO programs, as well as disability access matters. I will also have expertise in federal Employment and Training programs. In the interest of limiting boredom, I leave it to you, dear reader, to contact me in the event you would like to know more about this scintillating career. As to other activities, I am also on the Patients Advisory Board, and a consultant to Bayer Pharmaceuticals, to address the needs of M.S. patients and present the case for ease and interpretation in therapy, and providing medical remedies. This also includes presentations on various issues, and meeting with other patients and physicians to discuss related issues. I am reviving my writing career and activities, and have returned to musical activities as noted above. Political advocacy, organizing, and numerous community endeavors are also in my interests. This includes various alumni and professional associations. However, I also play a little tennis on the west coast, and engage in long distance bicycle rides. Please look up my site at Champions of Courage.com or Decade of Achievement in Ms.com, as well as on Facebook, and Yahoo Voices. Do not hesitate to call upon me should you have questions on any of the topics raised. Military On occasion we attended services with the Salvation Army. No additional military or martial services.

Doing a Rodgers and Hammerstein show just about a month ago. Always fun to work in the pit orchestra for a musical.

At a dance party a few weeks after the wedding in which our marriage was announced.
It was supposed to be a dance party. So we tried.
I believe this was Melissa's birthday a few months later. I added the moustache, goatee, and grey hair shortly thereafter.
Hello to the many kind people who have sent good sentiments, wishes, and reassurances. Just thought to send the photo I believe Marika took of Gabriel and Angela yesterday as the AFTER look following the transplant! What

A similar outdoor event, with Susan engaging in an unusual warm-up!
This was actually at the Citrus Heritage Park, but again, we sometimes get a happy and enthusiastic audience.
